Overview

Grumpy Grouper, located at 5764 Pottsville Pike in Leesport, PA, is a modest yet remarkable seafood spot that has earned its place as a hidden gem along Route 61. This unassuming food truck, known for its authentic and carefully prepared seafood, offers an experience that rivals many sit-down restaurants despite its casual roadside setting.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the lobster roll. Praised for its tender, buttery lobster meat, it matches the quality you might expect from coastal eateries in Maine. Equally enticing is the grouper sandwich, a local favorite distinguished by its perfectly tender, well-breaded fish, which some patrons have deemed the best fried fish in Berks County. The menu also includes specialties like the shrimp Po’ Boy and a variety of sandwiches such as pastrami and Cuban, delivering a hearty, flavorful bite every time.

Patrons often commend the atmosphere for its charm, with covered outdoor seating that welcomes families, friends, and pet owners alike. While the proximity to the highway means there is some road noise, it doesn’t detract from the warm, personable service provided by the owners and staff. Their genuine hospitality fosters a welcoming environment, making every visit feel personal and enjoyable.

This spot attracts seafood lovers who appreciate quality over formality and those willing to venture off the beaten path for a fresh, home-style meal. The kitchen’s commitment to freshness is clear; many items are served while supplies last, underscoring the focus on quality ingredients rather than quantity. Sides like crispy fries, creamy coleslaw, and fresh jalapeño poppers complement the main dishes, rounding out the meal with classic comfort elements.

Whether you’re seeking a casual lunch, a family dinner, or a laid-back stop to enjoy authentic seafood with a BYOB option, Grumpy Grouper offers a memorable dining experience. The recommendation to order ahead is well-advised, given the popularity and daily supply limits. Overall, this spot is especially suited for those who appreciate flavorful, well-crafted seafood in a relaxed, friendly setting that’s both pet-friendly and welcoming to regulars and newcomers alike.

I had a wonderful experience with the owners at this location. Additionally the seafood was very good and I'd absolutely return here again. Recommended to order ahead and eat there! I think they serve items on a while supplies last basis for the day. Grouper sandwich was awesome. The fries were great and crispy. It was the best fried fish in Berks county. Lobster roll was delicious with tender buttery lobster. Jalapeno poppers were fresh, like home made. They are pet friendly (be respectful with your pets) and BYOB. If you driven past and wondered about this location....stop. it's worth it.

Owner lied to me. He claimed I would LIKE the food and I didn't like it at all. I LOVED IT. I haven't had a cuban sandwich taste like home since I moved here 11yrs ago. The fries were perfect as well. I also tried the pastrami sandwich and now I'm hooked. You guys are the real deal. I feel cheated I didn't know you years ago. Perfect perfect perfect. I'll definitely be back. WOW Very nice and friendly amazing food.

Atmosphere lost a star only because of the road noise. I had such a great time! The staff and owners were over-the-top nice. We had grouper sandwich (tender and perfectly breaded) - Yum. Also in our group was the lobster roll. It was as good as we had at restaurants in Maine - Yum! The final dish was shrimp Po Boy. Perfectly breaded and extra large shrimp - Also yum! Honestly, we had such a great meal and great time that I'm sure we will make the hour and a half trip again.... Soon. I wish we would've taken pictures but the food and the fries were so good we forgot. My wife says it's not first date material because you end up with messy hands and face from devouring the food.

I'm giving 5 stars across the board cause the people there are nice and the food exceeded my expectations. I ate here with my friend for lunch. Keep in mind you are on the highway so it is noisy, if that bothers you just get it to go. They do have a covered area you can sit under and other tables if the sun is out and you want to grab a bite here. I got a chicken sandwich (LTMO) which came on a brioche bun with fries and coleslaw. My friend got the clam strips. We were both happy with everything. Portions are great and quality is even better

Our family of four went here tonight for the first time. I actually found Grumpy Grouper on Google Maps. So, first impressions - it’s a food truck on the side of Route 61 in Leesport; with no signage to identify its existence. We knew that going in and had no issues sitting at one of the covered tables to eat. The owners were very personable and attentive. The speed of service was similar to that of a traditional sit down seafood restaurant. As for the food, we ordered the gator po’ boy, the chicken fingers, and the weekly special Mahi Mahi. My wife enjoyed the large quantity of delicious chicken fingers and the over abundance of boardwalk/carnival style fries. My daughters ordered the Mahi Mahi and said the taste was very similar to what they’ve had in Florida restaurants; although it was a tad bit dry. They indicated the potatoes and mixed vegetables were delicious as well; and they didn’t even get to the decent sized side salad. I personally ordered the gator, which was piled high in the steak roll along with the massive quantity of fries. While the flavor of the sandwich with the sauce was tasty, the breading was a bit heavy and more crunchy than I prefer. The side of coleslaw however was spot on in my book - creamy, sweet, and tangy without being overly heavy. Our overall experiences and resulting opinions are that Grumpy Grouper is an almost hidden (in plain sight) gem offering better than expected seafood that is worth revisiting.

The owners (Mike & Crystal) are wonderful people. This was my first visit, and they welcomed us with friendly smiles and were so kind and easy to talk to. The best part was the food! If you’re looking for a new place to try, it’s worth stopping by.
